Shanghai Baby
Made in 2021. Idea inspired by and adapted from two novels, Shanghai baby(by Wei Hui) & Tropic of Cancer(by Henry Miller). Both novels contain superficial idea about young people's sexual relationships and struggles on adventures and social life. This video digged into what’s underneath the sensation from texts but to look at the social structure and how young people of that time discover the world and got beaten/compromised with the surrounding society, which they seem to have a despising attitude.
Wei Hui, the author of Shanghai Baby, now became a nominal spiritual healer writing such thing as Chicken Soup for the Soul, departuring from her image of a rebellion from Shanghai Baby which used to be her semi-autobiography. This video presents a shapeless idea of daily nightmare that the books imparted to the readers vicariously. It's also a snapshot of perception reading Shanghai Baby, and a memorized format of Wei Hui’s image as an author at the year of 1999.
Mainly made in frame by frame, different fps were used to cut each scene to various rythnms. The form of fluid was used to build a gradual pace of transformation.
